Hingham vs. Cohasset: Which South Shore Town Is Right for You?
Hingham and Cohasset sit side by side on the South Shore, and buyers often have both on their list. Both are historic coastal towns with strong schools, beautiful homes and easy access to Boston. But they feel different once you spend a day in each. Here is how they compare.
Hingham vs. Cohasset at a glance

| Feel | Larger, busier, more shopping and dining | Small, quiet, classic New England village |

| Housing | Wide range: antique colonials, newer subdivisions, condos and 55+ | Fewer homes, many oceanfront and estate properties, limited inventory |
Hingham: more of everything
Hingham is the bigger town, with more homes on the market and more ways to live. You can choose an antique colonial near Main Street, a newer home in a cul-de-sac neighborhood, a condo at the Shipyard, or a 55+ adult community. The commuter ferry to Boston is a huge draw for anyone working downtown.
Weekends mean World’s End, the harbor, Bathing Beach and the shops at Derby Street. If you want a lively town with lots to do close by, Hingham delivers. Learn more on my Hingham town guide.
Cohasset: small-town and coastal
Cohasset is smaller and quieter, with a picture-perfect village center and some of the most dramatic coastline on the South Shore. Homes come up less often, and many are on or near the water, which keeps competition high for the right property.
It is a great fit for buyers who want a close-knit community, beach days at Sandy Beach and a slower pace, while still being able to take the train to Boston. Learn more on my Cohasset town guide.
Also worth a look nearby
If neither town is quite right, neighboring Hull, Scituate, Hanover and Weymouth offer coastal living at a range of prices. Search all South Shore homes for sale.
What it means for sellers
If you own in either town, you are in one of the most sought-after markets on the South Shore. Buyers who lose out in one town often shift to the other, so pricing and marketing need to reach both groups.
